Us creatives have it bad. We get ideas. These ideas haunt us. They creep into our dreams and make themselves into little termites that eat away at our consciousness until we fulfill them. When these ideas are not fulfilled, they sit in a drawer in our head until future use or they are lost into the abyss of nothingness. Every once in a while, the idea creeps back into your life making obsession happen all over again.
There is the age old analogy of giving birth to ideas. When we finally fulfill or realize these ideas they are wonderful and beautiful. Other times, they are poorly executed or are killed and squashed. This is a horrible thing for young creatives.
Late at night I am haunted sometimes by previous ideas, concepts and visions of projects, ads, songs, films and other things I had never written down or realized. Gnawing away at my sleep, I wake up in the morning drained and not ready to start a new day of being creative.
For most, being creative in a tight time frame is similar to the pain of bad constipation. You push and push, face turning red, trying to make it happen. Nothing comes out. You get a little idea, but nothing great. Finally, when that idea comes and everyone in a room looks around and smiles and nods, you sigh with relief.
